In some Type 2 Diabetics, diet and weight management can manage their Diabetes.

A healthy diet that has been recommended time and time again is the "Mediterranean Diet." Not only is it higher in omega-3 oils, but also it has been suggested to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

However, some general rules of thumb need to be followed:

  1. Eat regular meals that have quite a lot of starch in them; bread, pasta, and rice. This is because starch is a complex carbohydrate and so takes longer to break down to sugar
  2. Reduction of the amount of fat is eaten is a must. This includes frying food, chocolate and snacks (crisps). A good alternative is grill or even steamed food. Steam is an excellent way to cook food. No only does it maintain a higher amount of vitamins in foods it also doesn't require any fat for it to be cooked.
  3. Fruit and vegetables are a must for a healthy diet. 5 portions a day have been recommended nationwide.
  4. Less salt predisposes to cardiovascular disease, so less salt must be used. A maximum should be 5g/day.
  5. Alcohol intake should be limited, at the most, 2 units/day and for men 3 units/day
  6. Cut down on sugar. This includes cakes, carbonated drinks. Try and go for sugar-free foods and drinks.

Weight reduction is essential in the management of Type 2 Diabetes. An ideal weight reduction would be about 0.5-1 kg per week.

Furthermore, diabetics must be more active. There is lots of evidence confirming that exercise is not only beneficial for diabetic management but also for cardiovascular risk. A recommended exercise regime would be regular, aerobic exercise about 30minutes at least 5 days a week.

In addition, behaviour modification is an important cause of overeating. So try and modify your eating habits. Consultations with doctors and specialist nurses can help you start with the weight and nutrition management in Type 2 Diabetes.
