There are certain types of cholesterol that are good and bad. Cholesterol is a fat like substance and is useful in the body as it is an essential component of cells membranes, and is needed to make hormones and Vitamin D. We get cholesterol from our food, and the liver can also produce it. Carriers (lipoproteins) transport cholesterol around the body.

The good Cholesterol is - High density Lipoprotein (HDL). This is said to be antiatherogenic. Recently, it has been proved that HDL increases with exercise and certain diets. The bad cholesterol is Low density and Very Low density Lipoproteins (LDL and VLDL respectively.) These are associated with atherogenic plaques and a predisposition to cardiovascular disease.

Therefore, to maintain a healthy body, you must achieve the following:

Total Choelsterol <5.0 mmol/l

Triglycetrides <2.3 mmol/l

LDL-cholesterol <3.0 mmol/l
