Blood glucose testing is especially useful for Diabetics to see how well their glucose is being controlled. Glucose can either be checked:

Note: blood glucose levels increases when unwell or infection

  1. Before breakfast or before evening meal.
  2. If on insulin- 2 hours after meal

teps to test blood glucose

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly
  2. check expiry date of strips
  3. always check 1 st to see if the meter is working by calibration with the fluid provided in pack
  4. A good place to test blood glucose is the side of your thumb as there is a pulp of flesh and so not very sensitive.
  5. Carefully put test strips in the meter making such you have hardly touched it
  6. Activate the needle puncher punch pulp of skin and squeeze some blood out
  7. Put the strip next to the blood on the thumb so that it is drawn up into the test trip
  8. Press the button to activate the meter
  9. Log the result in a diary noting the time, date, result and also if there was anything different (eg. Feeling ill, just did exercise etc.)

Usually in a normal healthy person, your random blood glucose shouldn't change that much. If you are experiencing differences in your random glucose or your Postprandial glucose (after you have eaten) and you do not understand why, then it is advisable to see your doctor.
