Is diabetes causing my husband's lack of interest in sex?

Q: "Does being diabetic affect your interest in sex or your performance? My husband takes metformin twice a day and he has lost his interest in sex. We are both in our fifties. Is there something he can do?" -- R.

A: Yes, diabetes can affect the sex drive of both men and women. Impotence, or erectile dysfunction (ED), may occur as a result of nerve or vascular damage associated with diabetes. The anxiety, stress, and depression that often accompany diabetes may also have an impact on libido and performance. Over half of diabetic men over age 50 report problems with impotence.
I encourage you and your husband to speak with his doctor about this problem. There are several medical options available to him. For more on ED and diabetes, see this National Institutes of Health publication.
